Power Distribution

Power Distribution Contractors in Wisconsin.

Switchgear, distribution equipment, and standby power, from purchase to energization under one contract.

WIL-Surge Electric is a power distribution contractor for commercial, industrial, and municipal facilities across Wisconsin. Our in-house crews install and coordinate the switchgear, switchboards, and distribution equipment that form the backbone of a facility. We manage procurement, testing, and commissioning, so switchgear, transformers, and distribution gear stay under one contract from purchase to energization.

Switchgear Installation

Switchgear and switchboards decide how power moves through a building. Our licensed crews handle switchgear installation along with the main service, feeders, and distribution equipment around it, coordinating each piece with the rest of the electrical scope.

Because we self-perform the work instead of handing it to subcontractors, the crew that sets your gear is the same crew that wires and energizes it, one team accountable for the full distribution system.

A distribution system works as a whole. Breakers and fuses at each level are chosen so that a fault trips the device closest to the problem, leaving the rest of the building powered. Feeders are sized for their loads and routed to keep runs practical, and panelboards are placed near the areas they serve.

Procurement & Testing

Distribution equipment often has long lead times, so we manage procurement early to keep your schedule intact. Once equipment is installed, we test it to NETA (InterNational Electrical Testing Association) standards before it carries load, so problems are found on test day instead of on move-in day.

Early procurement depends on early decisions. Equipment ratings, sizes, and arrangements have to be settled and approved before gear can be released for manufacturing, so we work through those details with owners, engineers, and general contractors while there is still float in the schedule. Delivery dates then drive when electrical rooms need to be ready to receive equipment.

Commissioning

Commissioning confirms that your distribution system performs the way it was designed before the building depends on it. We commission switchgear, transformers, and distribution equipment through energization to ensure your system delivers the power you need.

At turnover, owners receive the equipment documentation along with training videos, so facility teams know how to operate and maintain what we installed.

Emergency & Standby Power

When utility power fails, critical loads cannot. We install generators, automatic transfer switches, and UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems that keep essential equipment running through an outage.

That resilient backup is part of the power distribution work on projects like the Waukesha County Courthouse and Milwaukee County's Coggs Health & Human Services Center, and it is essential for healthcare facilities where patient care cannot be interrupted.

Planning Capacity for Today & Tomorrow

A distribution system is sized from the loads it has to carry. Lighting, HVAC equipment, process machinery, receptacles, and IT all add up, and load calculations under the NEC turn that list into the service size, feeder sizes, and panel ratings a building needs. Getting those numbers right at the start avoids gear that runs near its limit on day one.

Good planning also leaves room to grow. Spare breaker spaces, extra capacity in switchboards, and electrical rooms with space for future equipment make it easier to add a production line, a tenant fit-out, or new loads like EV charging without replacing the service. Owners who share expansion plans early get a system designed around where the facility is headed, not only where it is today.

When those new loads arrive, we install the EV charging stations and battery storage systems too, along with the service upgrades and distribution they need, so chargers and storage are sized and connected as part of the larger electrical system rather than bolted on.

Shutdowns, Tie-Ins & Energization

Additions and renovations usually mean tying new distribution into an existing service. That work depends on planned shutdowns, scheduled with the owner and, when the service itself is affected, with the utility. Sequencing tie-ins carefully keeps outages short and keeps the parts of a building that must stay running on power.

Energization is its own milestone. Before gear carries load, crews confirm connections, verify testing is complete, and follow NFPA 70E work practices for switching and lockout. Up-to-date panel directories and equipment labeling then give facility teams an accurate picture of what each breaker feeds, which matters every time the system is maintained or expanded.
